Kid's Value Pack (CD) by Caroline and Danny. (preschool – 5th grade)
This collection is a keeper. Upbeat, singable, value-packed lyrics will help children discuss and internalize good values. It has been an amazing discussion opener. My four-year-old(!) has most of the songs memorized. For the Gimme What I Want song, she asks, "Are those nice words mom?" The songs provide continual child-initiated openings to talk about appropriate words and hurtful words. Sometimes I even pause the CD to discuss and explain lines of text.
One day, coming home from camp, my daughter commented that one of her playmates had a funny eye. Indeed, a large mole/birthmark around V's eye is something of notice. Fortunately, we didn't miss a beat, and we mentioned the lyrics from "A Good Friend". Paraphrased, the song says… We can't judge a book by its cover; look for the good story inside. Snazzy lyrics emphasize goofy clothes, big feet, and buck teeth. We reviewed the words, and then had fun singing it together as a family.
This CD even has a teaching guide. No wonder many schools nation-wide have adopted this into their character curriculum. During a local workshop, Caroline and Danny had our preschool teachers jazzed.
